Joshua Proper joined Hobbs Straus in March of 2016. Josh graduated from the University of Arizona College of law with a certificate from the Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy Program in 2014. Josh attended Dartmouth College where he graduated with a double major in Native American studies and environmental studies. While at Dartmouth, Josh was president of Native Americans at Dartmouth and received the 2009 Udall Scholarship for his commitment to Native issues. Josh is Ahtna Athabascan and his family is from the Native Village of Chitina on the Copper River in Alaska.

Prior to joining Hobbs Straus Josh was a Tribal Attorney for the Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians in Washington State. While at the Tribe he assisted with drafting codes, reviewing contracts and assisting the Tribe with a wide variety of issues. During law school, Josh was a Summer Associate at Quarles & Brady in Phoenix and Perkins Coie in Anchorage. He also had the opportunity to work with the Office of the Attorney General for the Pascua Yaqui Tribe. Josh was President of the Native American Law Students Association and an active volunteer at the Tucson Indian Center’s Legal Referral Clinic during law school. Before law school, Josh was the first Native Nation Building Fellow at the Native Nations Institute where he worked with tribes to strengthen their governments. Josh also had the opportunity to intern at the United States Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution.

Growing up in Alaska, Josh has a love of the outdoors and often tries to get out to explore. He enjoys hiking and anything that will get him outside.
